Cold calling, turning the fear of rejection into a first meeting

Most sales teams avoid the phone. They call it outdated. The real reason is the fear of rejection.

I have made these calls for more than 25 years, in automotive components across Europe. The fear never fully goes. Preparation is what beats it.

If your team waits for RFQs to arrive rather than opening new accounts, this is for them.

The excuses, and what to do with them

I cannot reach them. Your target is not waiting for your call. Note the day and time you tried, and look for a pattern. Contact their colleagues. If the front door is shut, try the side door.

The assistant blocks me. Gatekeepers do their job. They put you through when the call carries value. Prepare, target the right person, and try early morning or late afternoon.

Cold calling is outdated. In an inbox full of email and LinkedIn requests, a prepared phone call stands out. The advantage is preparation, not the channel.

I do not have time. Winning new customers is the job. With a focused list and a clear offer, the phone is one of the fastest routes to a meeting.

What I do instead

Lead with value, not hope. Keep the pitch short. Here is our experience. Here are examples. Here is how we can help you. In email, never close with we look forward to hearing from you.

↳ Propose three specific dates and times. The question stops being if you meet, and becomes when.

Follow a process. An introduction email with a short teaser. A follow up call within two days to check it arrived, ready to pitch. I have held an 80% hit rate on getting the meeting this way.

Count every win. An order is not the only success. Every step forward in the process is a win. Counting them keeps a team on the phone.

Not every call lands. Each one moves you closer. It is the long game, and still the fastest way into a new account.

How does your team handle the call nobody wants to make?

If opening new accounts is where your growth has stalled, the first conversation is free.

A first conversation, no obligation

We believe business is all about people.

So a first conversation is just that. A conversation. We look at where the business stands today, the immediate risks, and one or two moves worth testing.

No presentation. No sales talk. No follow up unless you ask for it.
